JAY STOKES, JR., 80

Funeral services for Jay Stokes Jr., 80, of Fremont, will be 10:30 am Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. Jim Cunningham will officiate. Interment will be in the Blair Cemetery. Mr. Stokes died Monday, Dec. 10, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

Jay Stokes Jr. was born July 26, 1921 in Herman to Jay and Maude (Arnold) Stokes. He grew up in Blair.

On Feb. 14, 1942, he married LaVerne Lacey in Papillion. Following the couple’s marriage, they moved to Fremont and later to Omaha. After retiring in 1983, the couple moved back to Fremont.

He was an avid gardener and raised flowers. He so loved his wife and family, and will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne; five sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry Stokes, Sam Stokes, and Rick and Chris Stokes, all of Fremont; Mark and Cynthia Stokes of Scotland, S.D.; and Roger and Roseanne Stokes of Council Bluffs; four daughters and sons-in-law, Susan Stokes-Gilmore and Gene Gilmore and Sherry and Bob Gay, all of Omaha; Barbara and Michael Beal of LaVista; and Jamie and Mark Kraus of Springfield; brother and sister-in-law, Earl W. and Doris Stokes of Blair; two sisters, Mardelle Wolf and Lara Peterson, both of Blair; sister-in-law, Jean Stokes of Blair; 19 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Shirley, James and Lester Stokes; and two sisters, Marjorie Katt and Luella Rolfs.

Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.
