MRS. NANCY STOKES OF HERMAN DIED IN OMAHA MONDAY

Mrs. J. J. Long received word on Monday that her only sister, Mrs. Nancy A. Stokes of Herman, had passed away at Omaha, where she had gone for medical treatment a few days before.

Deceased was born in Lake Lee county, Missouri, 77 years ago and was one of the pioneer residents of Washington county. She with her husband homesteaded land near Herman fifty years ago, and she had been a resident of Washington county ever since. Her husband died twenty years ago and was buried in the Blair cemetery. Surviving her are her only sister, Mrs. J. J. Long of Blair; and four brothers, James Ballard of Burwell, Nebr.; Frank who lives in Oregon; John in Canada; and Henry who resides somewhere in Nebraska; an only daughter, Mrs. Josie Hart and an adopted son, Jay Stokes. The funeral was held Wednesday at 2:30 pm at the M.E. church in Herman and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.

Close of a Long Useful Life

Mrs. Nancy A. Stokes Responds to the Call to a Better Land

Mrs. Nancy A. Stokes died in Omaha Monday, September 17, 1923 after a lingering illness. The funeral was held at the Herman Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, September 19, Rev. W. A. Bowden officiating, assisted by Rev. T. J. Reese, pastor of the Baptist church.

Notwithstanding he inclemency of the weather the church was filled with the friends and neighbors of the deceased who had known her many years as one whose upright and exemplary life commanded the love and respect of all. Music was furnished by a quartet, Mrs. George Lowe, Miss Mildred Swanson, Fred Robertson and Charles R. Gray with Mrs. E. P. Hanson at the piano.

Burial was at the Herman cemetery.

Nancy Adeline Ballard was born at Laclede, Mo., January 26, 1846. She moved with her parents to Mills county, Iowa, at an early age. Later she moved to Omaha where in 1867 she married James Stokes. They moved in the spring of 1868 to a homestead three miles west of Herman. Two daughters were born to them, May, who died at the age of seven and Josephine, now Mrs. George Hart of Herman.

The family moved to Herman in 1892, where Mr. Stokes died, January 24, 1897.

Mrs. Stokes leaves to mourn her departure to a better land her daughter, Mrs. George Hart, an adopted son, Jay Stokes of Herman, eleven grandchildren, one sister and two brothers.

She was a devout member of the Methodist Episcopal church , joining the local organization many years ago. She took an active part in the church work as long as her strength permitted.

She had been ill since 1918 and had been failing rapidly in the last few months. She had been in Omaha taking treatments several weeks before her death which came suddenly although not unexpectedly.

Mrs. Nancy Stokes passed away Monday evening in Omaha where she has been for several weeks under the care of a physician. The deceased has been a resident of Herman for many years. Death was due principally to her advanced age. She has been in failing health for a year and a half, a part of the time being in the hospital in Tekamah.

The body was brought to Herman on the afternoon train Tuesday and taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Hart. She leaves as ? relatives a daughter Mrs. George Hart, an adopted son, Jay, a sister, Mrs. Long of Blair and a brother whose home is in Fla. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Wed., at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. W. A. Bowden and burial made in the Herman cemetery beside her husband, who passed on a number of years ago.
