George F. Kobs, 86

George F. Kobs, 86, of Fort Calhoun, died Friday, May 2, 2003.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home in Fort Calhoun. Interment will be in the Fort Calhoun Cemetery.

George F. Kobs was born May 11, 1916, in Bennington to William and Antonia Kobs. He was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church.

He helped his parents on the farm until he was called to duty to serve his country. He entered the Army on Aug. 6, 1942, and received his honorable discharge as a TC4 Sergeant on Oct. 5, 1945. He served with the 3463rd Ordnance Company. Along with his other duties, he went through four devastating battles with his fellow soldiers in the European theater, including northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon and Good Conduct Ribbon.

On April 1, 1956, he married Lucille Morrison. She preceded him in death in November 2000.

Mr. Kobs continued on the farm with the help of his brother, Roy, until he retired. He loved to dance and play the accordion. He had many friends and dancing partners.

He met Helen Shelton in November 2001, and kept his friendship with her. The couple were planning to marry June 14.

Mr. Kobs was a life member of V.F.W. Post No. 2503 of Omaha, and a 40-year member of Eagles No. 38.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Edna Kobs of Fort Calhoun; step-daughter, Doris Taulbourg; fiancé, Helen Shelton of Kennard; many nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille; two brothers, William and Ervin; three sisters, Minnie Wallace, Virginia Rassman, and Dorothy Priborsky.

Memorials are suggested to the Fort Calhoun Rescue Squad.

Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
