William J. Koopman, Jr., 84

William J. Koopman Jr., 84, of Birmingham, Ala., died April 1, 2005.

Funeral services are 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, at First United Methodist Church in Blair. Interment is in the Blair Cemetery.

William James Koopman Jr. was born Feb 3, 1921, in Blair to William J. and Mae. M. Koopman.

On April 12, 1943, he married Barbara Morehouse in Tekamah.

He graduated from the Iowa State University School of Engineering in 1942. Upon graduation, he embarked upon a long and distinguished career with the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). He traveled extensively for ALCOA to Japan, South America, Europe and Africa, and was instrumental in establishing an international manufacturing presence for the company.

He is survived by his sons William James III, M.D., of Birmingham, Ala., Steven Burke of Spruce Pine, N.C., and John McCormack of County Carlow, Ireland; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; and sisters, Frances Murdoch, Mildred States, and Mae Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent in appreciation and honor for Dr. Steven Hill, and his wife, Beverly, to the Spruce Pine Memorial Hospital Building Fund, PO Box 147, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
