Young Man Found Dead Overcome By Gas Fumes

William Ferris, son of Mrs. John Sutherland, was found dead in the kitchen of his mother’s home Sunday morning, having been overcome by fumes from the gas range.

Deceased, who was a painter, made his home with his mother and step-father when in Blair, and on Saturday evening he came home about ten o’clock and, as Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland supposed, retired to his room. When Mr. Sutherland arose about eight o’clock Sunday morning he went to the kitchen and found the young man cold in death’s embrace and the jets of the gas range open. A physician was immediately summoned who stated that death had ensured several hours previous.

William Ferris was born in England, April 29, 1884; he had been a resident of Nebraska for a number of years.

The funeral was held from Campbell’s undertaking parlors Tuesday afternoon, Rev. A. D. Smalley, conducting a short service, and burial was made in the Blair Cemetery.

Mrs. Sutherland has the sympathy of many friends in her bereavement, which is only one of several she has passed through. A few years ago she lost two sons, who were drowned while serving in the Navy. Deceased is survived by other relatives, the location of whom we were unable to get.

WM. FERRIS DEAD

Wm. Ferris, aged 29, died at the home of his mother, Mrs. John Sutherland, on last Saturday night. The young man had been doing a job of painting and had come home in the late afternoon. He was around town with his associates until about ten o’clock at night when he went home.

Instead of going to his room, he went into the kitchen, closing the door after him and turned on the gas in the gas range. Whether he lighted the gas or not no one knows, but he was found in the morning seated by the gas range dead from the effects of the gas.

He came with his mother from England about eight years ago, where his father had lost his life in a mine explosion, and where two brothers had been drowned while serving in the British navy. He was the only child left of the family.

The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the J. E. Campbell Undertaking Parlors, and interment made in the Blair cemetery.
