Crash Kills Blair Youth

PFC. Bert A. (Joe) Moore, 19, One Of Five Killed In Nevada Wreck

A Blair serviceman, Pfc. Bert A. Moore, 19, better known locally as Joe Moore, was one of five persons killed Friday in a head on automobile crash near Gardnerville, Nev.

Pfc. Moore was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Moore of 204 West State St., and had been stationed with the Marines at the Pickel Meadows Cold Weather Camp south of Gardnerville.

Authorities said the head on crash occurred at high speed, killing five persons outright and injuring three others critically.

Three of the dead were Marines and the other two death victims were civilians in a station wagon heading into Nevada from California on a duck and goose hunting trip.

Funeral is Today

Since Pfc. Moore’s death occurred while he was outside of military jurisdiction, his death was announced almost immediately, and the family heard the report via radio before being officially informed by the Marine Corps.

The body of Pfc. Moore has been brought to the Campbell Mortuary here. Funeral rites are to be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Christian Church, with the Rev. Ralph Kersey officiating. The casket will not be opened.

Burial is to be in Blair Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Ira Bixler, Fred Murphy, Jerry Thomas and Joe Allen, all of Blair, Andy Wrich of Kennard and Frank Leslie of Logan, Ia.

Pfc. Moore is survived, besides his parents, by five brothers, Pvt. Ronald Moore, who is stationed at Camp Chaffee, Ark., Carroll, Edward, Dale and Floyd, all of Blair, and by one sister, Colleen, Blair. Pvt. Ronald Moore has returned to Blair to attend the funeral.
