Clement S (Army WW I) Mortensen
Died on 10/10/1918

Two newspaper articles # 1 - - Tribune 10 Oct 1918

Mrs. Otto Kruse reports the death in an army camp in Illinois of Clem Mortensen, aged 32 years last month. Washington county never had a finer, nobler farm boy than Clem. For a few years before leaving for camp he had been in the auto business in Dakota. The loss will come hard on his aged parents. His parents came from Denmark years ago and never were there more loyal Americans than they are.

Note: Since the actual death date was not given, the news article date was used.

Note: On 1910 Census at Ft Calhoun, Washington County, NE: Clement S. Mortensen, son; age 23 and single.

d. 10/4/1916 Clem Mortensen, who grew to manhood in this vicinity, was stricken with the Spanish influenza at the officers’ training camp at Camp Grant, Ill., on Sept. 21, this attack being followed by pneumonia, which proved fatal, death claiming this splendid young life on October 4. Three years ago Clem went to Winner, S. D. and engaged in the auto business, in this short time building up one of the finest and largest garages in the state. This he left a few months ago to offer his services to his country, enlisting in the motor branch, and later being promoted to the officers’ training camp at Camp Grant. Some time before this he had made application to enter the aviation service and the day of his death word came that he had been accepted in that branch. Probably no death ever shocked this community more that did Clem’s. He was in every way an alert young man, and the blow to his relatives and friends is softened only by the fact that he gave his life for his country and no man can do more. Funeral services were held from the home of his parents, Mrs. And Mrs. Mads Mortensen, in Omaha yesterday afternoon and burial made in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

The birth name and year of death were established through Find A Grave Memorial# 136450788, however ....
