Darleen E. Schmidt, 86

Darleen E. Schmidt, 86 years, originally from Arlington, was called home on Thursday, May 21, 2015, to be with her maker and to be reunited with her true love, Curtis. She passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Nye Legacy in Fremont, where she had been residing since March of 2011.

Darleen was born Jan. 28, 1929, on the family farm northeast of Arlington to J. Paul and Elsie (Dahlkoetter) Knecht. While growing up there she helped her parents on the farm as did her sisters. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith in 1929 and confirmed in 1943, all at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she was a lifelong member. While there she held offices in the Lutheran Woman’s Missionary League. She was a choir member and Sunday school teacher, and spent many hours volunteering for vacation bible school. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1946 and moved to Fremont to work at Gambles for a few years. In June of 1953 she married her love, Curtis W. Schmidt, and made their home north of Arlington on the Elkhorn River. To this union they adopted two children, Bruce G. Schmidt and Barbara A. (Schmidt) Albus. Darleen loved flowers and she had them everywhere. She loved to garden, sew, play cards and crochet, just to name a few of her hobbies. She is probably best known for her talent in the ceramics she made. Her beautiful pieces are displayed in many homes. She was a 4-H leader for 17 years and a Red Cross volunteer at FAMC with over 7500 hours. She earned the Admiral General of the Navy plaque for that service. One of her favorite times of the year was the Washington County Fair. She was the flower superintendent for 26 years and enjoyed visiting with each and every person that stopped by.

She is survived by son, Bruce (Brenda) Schmidt of Arlington; daughter, Barbara (Schmidt) Albus of Arlington; sister, Violet Stork of Fremont; and two grandchildren: Ryan (Danielle) of Chicago, Ill., and Jessica (Casey) of Fremont.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister, Lucille Knecht.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at St Paul’s Lutheran Church at Arlington. The Rev. Jason Duley will officiate. Visitation will be Monday, May 25, 2015, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington and will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery at Arlington.
