Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church for Carl Rudolph “Rudy” Fick, 88 who died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Omaha following an accident at the Missouri River east of Blair July 8, 1990. Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Blair Cemetery.

Carl Rudolph Fick was born in DeSoto, Nebraska, May 1, 1902, the son of German pioneer settlers, William and Christina Balster Humphries Fick. He attended school in Washington County through the eighth grade. He was employed in 1925 by Red Campbell Funeral Home and Furniture Store in Blair. In 1929, he worked for Braley and Dorrence Funeral Home in Omaha for two years until he received his undertaker’s license in 1930.

He then worked for Nora Hunt as undertaker in Palisade, Nebraska. In 1934, he was employed by the State of Nebraska as a game warden, serving in southwest Nebraska.

Following his return to Blair he owned and operated Fick’s Funeral Home. In 1950, he became sheriff of Washington County and held that position for nearly three terms until his retirement in 1962.

He was regarded as an avid hunter and fisherman and in his younger years was privileged to act as guide for Arthur Storz, owner of Storz Brewery in Omaha at Ducklore Lodge on the North Platte River near Lisco, Nebraska. Among the other celebrities and political figures at the camp were actors Robert Taylor and Clark Gable.

He was a member of the Blair Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and Masonic Lodge in Blair.

He was married to Ruth Cole. She preceded him in death.

He was also preceded in death by a half-brother, William A. Humphries; a half-sister, Anna Humphries Cheeley; and a brother, John William Fick.

He is survived by one daughter, Lee Ann Leonard, Omaha; and three grandchildren.

Memorials can be made to the Blair Rescue Squad or to Ducks Unlimited.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the services.
