Area Lumberman Dies At The Age Of 86

Chris Korshop, of Herman, died on July 24, 1981 at the age of 86. The well-known area lumberman died at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church with Rev. C.C. Madsen and Rev. Carl Schattauer Jr. officiating. Campbell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be at the Herman Cemetery at Herman, Nebraska.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Esther; three sons, Raymond of Oakland, Nebraska; Earl of Fremont, Nebraska; and Frank of Herman; two daughters, Mrs. Gene (Betty) Megrue of Blair, and Mrs. Leonard (Marilyn) Jackson of Fremont, Nebraska; twelve grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He also has four brothers living in Denmark: Jacob, Erik, Knud and Hans.

Active Pallbearers are: Charles Brodersen, Eugene Christiansen, Allan Iverson, Holger Korshop, Howard Laughlin and Paul Grey. Honorary Pallbearers are: Bill Peck, Roy Hansen, Wilbur Lowe, Fred Kjeldgaard, Dr. Les Grace, Alfred Nelson and Clem Grady.

Chris Korshop was born on August 10, 1894, at Brejning, Jylland Denmark, to Niels and Jensine Korshoj. He grew up in Denmark, and at the age of 20 he immigrated to the United States, coming directly to Blair, Nebraska where he made his home with the Rasmus Johansens. He worked in and around Blair until 1917 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was discharged from the Air Force in February of 1919, and returned to Blaiar where he was employed in a lumber yard.

In 1922 he was united in marriage to Esther M. Madsen, also of Blair. They made their home in Blair until 1926, when he bought an interest in the Herman, Nebraska lumber yard from the Hezog Estate. He took over management and moved to Herman, where they made their home and raised their family.

After 50 years of actively managing Korshoj Lumber Co., Chris semi-retired from the business and a son, Frank, took over the management.

In 1951, Chris purchased Walling Lumber Co. in Fremont and was active at the onset, in its management with his son Earl.

For over 50 years the Korshojs were members of the First Lutheran Church in Blair. Chris was also a member for over 50 years of I.O.O.F Lodge #14 Blair, Nebraska; Masonic Lodge #222, Herman; and the American Legion Jackson-Peck Post #274 of Herman. He received a 60 year pin from the Danish Brotherhood lodge at Blair. He served as a board member for 24 years at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home at Blair. He also was a member of the Herman Public School Board for nine years.
