Vern Charles Frederick Kruse was born on January 24, 1922, on the family farm, southwest of Kennard, to Emil and Dora (Schroeder) Kruse. He grew up on the family farm and attended Mattes School. He was baptized on April 5, 1922, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington and was confirmed on February 9, 1947.

After Vern’s schooling he began working for a neighboring farm. In 1943, he was married to Dorothy Todd, who preceded him in death in 1946. To this union the couple’s son, Richard, was born. On June 22, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mildred Rosenbaum. To this union the couple’s son, Ronald, and daughter Mari were born.

Vern was always known to be a hard-working and skilled man. He worked as a farmer, a carpenter, a mason, electrician, and worked for Japp Construction doing dirt work, but his favorite job of all was always as a grandfather and great-grandfather.

Vern and Mildred enjoyed dancing and going on bus tours; over the years they made countless lifelong friends with these activities.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Blair; sons Richard (Barbara) Kruse of Bennington and Ronald (Barbara) Kruse of Kennard; daughter Mari (Bill) Japp of Kennard; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Helen Kruse of Blair, Judy Rosenbaum of Sidney and Marge Tilton of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Todd Kruse; brother Elvin Kruse and brother-in-law Don Rosenbaum.

Memorials may be directed, in Vern’s name, to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
