Mother of Mary Sully Died in Iowa

Services for Mrs. Isabel F. Spies, of Emmetsburg, Iowa, were held Thursday, November 15th, at 10 a.m. from St. Thomas Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Charles Borman officiated. Mass servers were grandsons of Mrs. Spies: Francis Hart, Thomas Hart and Lou Sully, Jr. of Fort Calhoun. Burial was in St. Jacob Cemetery at Graettinger.

Casket bearers were grandsons of Mrs. Spies: Robert Spies, Jr., John A. Spies, Peter C. Hart, Kevin M. Finnegan, James A. Hart, John F. Hart and Thomas B. Sully of Fort Calhoun. Grandchildren were also honorary pall bearers.

Mrs. Spies died Tuesday, November 13th at Palo Alto County Hospital. She was 81.

On January 3, 1924, Isabel and Charles J. Spies were married in St. Louis. Mrs. Spies had made her home in Emmettsburg since her marriage. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters of America and a past member of the Palo Alto Memorial Hospital Board.

Surviving are nine children: Mrs. Louis (Mary) Sully of Fort Calhoun, Mrs. Mario Minell of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mrs. Jane Johnston of Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Peter Hart of Emmetsburg; Charles J. Spies, Jr. of Bloomington, Minnesota; John F. Spies of Emmetsburg; Robert Spies of Brooklin Center, Minnesota; Thomas A. Spies of Paradise Valley, Arizona; and Mrs. Michael Finnegan of Iowa City, Iowa. Fifty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Spies was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Spies, on November 4, 1963.
