MRS. PETER STRICKLETT, SR., WAS A PIONEER OF THE DESOTO AREA

The thinning ranks of old settlers were further reduced with the death of Mrs. Peter Stricklett, Sr. Tuesday, June 11, 1974. In her ninety years, she saw many changes, for her lifetime reached from the “Old Days” to the modern present.

Esther B. Stricklett was born August 20, 1883 in the hills west of old DeSoto, Nebraska, in a log cabin belonging to her grandmother. She was the daughter of Oliver and Cora M. Bouvier. Her paternal grandparents were pioneers in the DeSoto area and her maternal grandparents were homesteaders in Adams County, Nebraska. She attended the Blair Schools, “boarding” in town when in the elementary grades.

On Dec. 24, 1902, she was married to Peter Stricklett whose family came to the area before Blair existed. The couple farmed in the county until 1916, then moved to an acreage at what was then the “edge of town.” This was her home for more than 58 years. Her husband died in October of 1935 and she became the head of the family, a position she successfully filled until the day of her death. From her Grandmother Bouvier, she inherited a “green thumb” and spent many long, happy hours among her flowers.

Mrs. Stircklett was a member of the Blair Congregational Church and of the Order of the Eastern Star.

All six children survive their mother. They are Mrs. Francis B. (Dorothy) Anderson of Willow Springs, Missouri; Miss Mary V. Stricklett, Blair; Peter Stricklett, Blair; Mrs. Thomas E. (Inabelle0 Powell, Fairfax, Virginia; Mrs. J. Rod (Coral Jean) McVicker, Hastings, Nebraska; and Roger B. Stricklett, Blair.

There are also 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren , one great-great-grandchild and four cousins.

Family services were held at the home at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, followed by services at the Blair Congregational Church with the Rev. John Fritzmeier officiating at both.

Pallbearers were Louis Andersen, Tom Powell, Gary Johnson, Roger P. Stricklett, Bruce McVicker, and John Strain.

Campbell Mortuary was in charge of arrangements with interment in the Blair Cemetery.
