Darrell E. Flake, 88, of Blair, formerly of rural Herman, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. )

Services will be scheduled at a later date. )

Darrell was born Oct. 7, 1926, at rural Herman, to Edward and Augusta (Hass) Flake. )

Darrell served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 1, 1946, to April 12, 1947, during World War II in Japan. )

He farmed all his life on the farm where he was born. After retirement in 1984, he worked part time for area farmers. )

After moving to Blair in 1998, he worked part time for the City Parks Department. )

Darrell married Ruth McKenzie on April 8, 1950, in Fremont. Ruth died June 11, 2011. )

Darrell was a former member of Salem Lutheran Church at Fontanelle and the Lutheran Men in Mission. He was a current member of First Lutheran Church in Blair. )

He was a member of V.F.W. Post 8332 of Arlington and served on the Vacoma Cemetery Board for more than 60 years. )

In more recent years, Darrell spent much of his time volunteering at the Washington County Recycling Center in Blair. )

He is survived by son Louis E. Flake of Baltimore, Md.; daughters: Ann (C. Lee, Jr.) Roll of Kansas City, Mo., Rebecca Flake of Alexandria, Va., Carol (Thomas) Murray of Clinton, Md., Sharon (David) Axelrod of Chicago, Ill., Pamela (James) Linke of Louisville and Susan Coates of Belcamp, Md.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. )

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruth; and two sisters: Lorraine Wachter and Thelma Heinssen. )

Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church at Blair or to the American Diabetes Association. )

Moser Memorial Chapel of Fremont is in charge of arrangements.
