HUGH SUTHERLAND DIED AT HIS HOME WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1

Hugh Sutherland, a lifelong resident of Washington County, and the son of one of the community’s early-day pioneers, died at his home at 1047 Nebraska Street last Wednesday, June 1st. He was 71 years of age.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Saturday morning, June 4th, with the Rev. James Metzgar conducting the service. Burial was made in the Blair Cemetery under the direction of the Campbell Mortuary.

Mr. Sutherland was the son of Abe Sutherland. His parents were prominent in the early history of the community.

He grew up and attended school in Blair and for many years had been an employee of Washington County, associated with the road department. He has operated maintenance equipment for the department.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; and by six daughters. They are: Mrs. Leon (Vivienne) Hatton of Glendale, Arizona; Mrs. James (Phyllis) Quick of Council Bluffs; Mrs. Melvin (Verna) Kuhr of Blair; Mrs. Gerald (Marilyn) Bassett, Fremont; Mrs. Herman (Sidney) Penke, Blair; and Mrs. Robert (Alice) Richer of Millard. There are 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons.

John Sutherland of Blair is a brother.

Pallbearers were Leon Hatton, James Quick, Melvin Kuhr, Gerald Bassett, Herman Penke, Robert Richter and Duane Finch.
