John James Cooper died last Thursday of organic valvular heart trouble, having been afflicted for several years. The funeral was held at the home in Dexterville at 3:30 last Sunday afternoon, Rev. George Smith, of Herman, officiating. Mr. Cooper was born in Lewis County, Kentucky, Feb. 3rd, 1845, and was therefore past 71 years of age. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and came to this county in 1868 and was in the mercantile business for some years. He had an only daughter by a first marriage, who married Wm. Payne, now of Omaha, and died shortly after the birth of a son, Leslie, who was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Dick and raised by them. He was married to Frances Pamelia Pennington July 27th, 1871, no children having been born to them. While working on the old Richter brick yard west of town the bank caved in on him and he suffered a broken jaw from which he finally recovered, much to the surprise of everyone. He was prominent in democratic politics up to recent years, being one of the delegates to every county convention held in the county for over forty years. He was a member of the K of P Lodge for many years. Those present from out of town to attend the funeral were George Pennington, of Burkett, Neb., a brother of Mrs. Cooper, and Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Greene, of Randolph, Neb., Mrs. Greene being a sister to Mrs. Cooper.
