HARLAND B. SUVERKRUBBE, 84

(veteran)

Harland B. Suverkrubbe, 84, of Bennington, died Monday, July 3, 2006, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha.

Funeral services were Friday, July 7, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington. Interment was in Flower Hill Cemetery in Omaha.

Harland Bruce Suverkrubbe was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Bennington to Frederick and Mary (Bunz) Suverkrubbe. He grew up in Bennington where he attended grade school and graduated from Bennington High School in 1938.

As a young boy, he learned to hunt and fish, was active in sports, and at the age of 8, went to work at Mangold’s Grocery Store.

He enlisted in the United States Marines in 1942, and served aboard the USS Nevada. He saw action in several invasions and was stationed off Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion. He was discharged in 1945 and returned home to Bennington.

On Dec. 8, 1946, he married Jane Louise Clancey in Boston, Mass. The couple had one daughter, and made their home in Bennington. After his wife’s death in 1966, he married Amy Lofgren in Stanton, Iowa, on April 30, 1977. They, too, made their home in Bennignton.

He worked for a short time for the phone company before working as a carpenter for Elmer Petersen Construction until 1967. He worked for several companies for a short time until he went to work for Vince Petersen Construction, where he worked until his retirement in 1986.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, gardening, playing cards and dancing. He played town team baseball and basketball and was active in his community.

He was a member of the Bennington American Legion; Irvington V.F.W.; the USS Nevada Association; St. John’s Lutheran Church; served on the fire department and the town board.

His family remembers him as a “people person” who loved to talk and share stories over a beer. He was a gifted story-teller and loved to reminisce about the old days. His greatest joy came from gathering family and friends at home.

He is survived by his daughter, Gail Suverkrubbe of Bennignton; sister-in-law, Evelyn Suverkrubbe of Bennington; nephew, Richard Suverkrubbe of Omaha; special friend, Glenda Chapman of Omaha; cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by both of his wives; brother, Warren; and nephew, David.

Memorials are suggested to the Bennington Library Building Fund.

Hadan-Golden-Reichmuth Mortuary in Bennignton was in charge of arrangements.
