Joseph Ross Love was born Aug. 3, 1903 to Joseph and Mattie (Stewart) Love, on the rural family farm. The Love farm, five miles west of Blair on Highway 91, was settled in 1870, and homesteaded in 1875 by his grandparents, George and Elizabeth Love, immigrants from Ireland. Ross Love farmed the land with his father until he purchased the land upon his father’s retirement. The homestead continues to remain in the Love family.

He attended the Sutherland School.

On Aug. 30, 1930, he married Lela Burger in Jefferson County, Iowa. The couple remained on the farm until they moved to town in 1987. Following his wife’s death in 1993, Mr. Love moved to Good Shepherd Home in 1994.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau; Grange; Blair Masonic Lodge; and First Christian Church.

Mr. Love will be fondly remembered for his gentle personality, kind heart and loving smile.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Gwen and Edward Smith of Tucson, Ariz.; and Norma and Herman “Art” Becker of Missouri City, Texas; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles R. Love of Sacramento, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lela; four sisters, Drusilla French; Elizabeth Montgomery; Mary Gleeson; Gertrude Trumble; and two brothers, Aubrey and Stewart.
