Miss Helen Crapenhoft, 14 years old, Dies suddenly of Pneumonia

Monday morning this community was horrified to learn that at 11 o’clock Sunday night, Miss Helen Crapenhoft, had at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Crapenhoft, corner Eagle and Fourth streets, passed from earth after an illness lasting but little over three days. Pneumonia was the cause of the young lady’s death, and all that medical skill could do was employed in efforts to save her life. So brief was the period of sickness that the announcement of Helen’s death was the last intimation that many of our people had that she had been ailing, the news being all the harder for her friends to bear. Miss Helen attended school last Thursday forenoon as usual, but before the noon hour arrived she asked to be excused, and left for her home, apparently very much distressed. Next day Dr. Davies was called, and prescribed for the patient but on Sunday the symptoms became so alarming that a Fremont doctor was called in consultation, but nothing could be done for her and in the presence of her mother and a nurse, Helen dropped into that “sleep that knows no awakening” on earth. The sad news was at once sent to Miss Florence, a sister, who is attending school at Peru, who arrived home Monday evening. Mr. Crapenhoft, however, was not so easy to get in communication with, as he was in Greely County selling nursery stock for the Arlington nurseries, and it was not until 6 o’clock Monday night that the distressing news was received by him. He arrived home Tuesday afternoon.

The funeral was held this (Thursday) morning at 10:30 at the Congregational church, Rev. A.H. Leshman officiating. Interment was in Arlington cemetery. The schools were closed for the morning so as to give both teachers and pupils an opportunity to attend.

Miss Helen Crapenhoft was born in Surprise, Nebr. Nov. 6, 1896, and died Feb. 5, 1911 making her just 14 years and 3 months old at the time of her death. She came to Arlington with her parents nine years ago and has resided her ever since, most of the time being spent on a farm about three miles northeast of town where she attended the Whitford School for several years. A little over a year ago her parents moved to Arlington and Helen entered the ninth grade of the high school, and this year she was a member of the Sophomore class and was always looking forward with joyous anticipation of the time when she would be a senior. She was an unusually bright student, and her presence in the high school will be greatly missed, as she was very popular with both faculty and students.
