#1 George A. Suverkrubbe, 84

George A. Suverkrubbe, 84, of Blair, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 25, at First Lutheran Church in Blair, with interment in the Blair Cemetery.

George Albert Suverkrubbe was born March 26, 1919, to Gus and Amanda (Rohn) Suverkrubbe at their home near Fort Calhoun. He attended Green Elementary School. He graduated from Fort Calhoun High School in 1936, where he played on the school football and basketball teams. Following high school, he attended the University of Oregon for a short time, where he also played on the school’s football team.

On May 10, 1942, he married Erma Holstein. In June of that year, he was inducted into the United States Army. After basic training, his wife joined him at Fort Sill, Okla., and Fort Bliss, Texas. He was sent to the Pacific front during World War II. While serving his country, he earned seven medals including the Bronze Star and the Philippine Liberation Award. He was discharged in September 1945, and rejoined his wife and son.

The family moved to their farm south of Blair in 1947, where Mr. Suverkrubbe began a lifelong career and love of farming. He once said that once a farmer puts a plow to the earth, a bond is formed with the land that few can understand unless they have experienced it. He continued to be involved in the farm operation of his son and grandson, well into his later years.

He was known for his big heart, cheerful attitude, great sense of humor, and quick wit. He enjoyed many friends and had a good time wherever he went. Some of his favorite pastimes were bowling, playing cards, and simply enjoying the company of others. His philosophy was to “Leave ‘em smiling.” His generous loving spirit will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Erma; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Bobbi Suverkrubbe of Blair; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Ted Killham and Lois and Richard Johnson, all of Omaha; seven grandchildren and their spouses, and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Louella Christensen of Blair, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel, in infancy, and Randall, at age 18.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
