Bertel Bertelsen Jr., 84

Bertel Bertelsen Jr., 84, of Washington died May 10, 2001 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington, with the Rev. John Pierson officiating. Interment will be at Prairie View Cemetery in Washington.

Bertel “Red” Bertelsen, Jr. was born Aug. 12, 1916 in Washington to Bertel Sr. and Laurine (Andersen) Bertelsen. He was a lifelong resident of Washington. He attended Washington Grade School and graduated from Benson High School. As a youngster, his life was filled with work on the family farm and his love for animals.

After graduation, Mr. Bertelsen worked for a short time on the railroad with his brother, Hans, but soon returned to the family farm, where he would spend all his working years. He worked tirelessly on the farm, and helped care for his mother and father in their later years. He enjoyed playing cards and storytelling, but most of all he loved people and especially enjoyed visiting with children.

Mr. Bertelsen remained in his home until two months ago, when failing health forced him to move to Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair.

He is survived by his nephew, Robert Mathiesen of San Jose, Calif., his nieces, Evelyn Owens of Concord, Calif., and Carol Moore of San Mateo, Calif., and friend, Connie Cheek of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters.
