SIXTEENTH STREET CROSSING HAS CLAIMED ANOTHER LIFE

RANDALL SUVERKRUBBE KILLED. KRISTA KULT INJURED.

The sixteenth street railroad crossing in Blair has claimed its second life in less than a year. Thursday evening at approximately 9:30, a Chicago and Northwestern train radioed to their Missouri Valley dispatcher’s office that they had hit a car in Blair. A telephone call to Blair sent the police out looking for the accident. It didn’t take them long to find the over-turned auto just west of the 16th street crossing next to the Blair Post Office parking lot.

The Blair Rescue Squad was having a meeting at the Fire Hall and arrived on the scene in minutes after being notified. Randall Suverkrubbe and Krista Kult were taken to the Blair Hospital.

TRIED TO STOP

The near new Chevrolet LaGuna was registered to Mr. and Mrs. George Suverkrubbe of the rural route south of Blair, parents of Randall Lee Suverkrubbe. Krista Kult is the 17 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Kult of 2338 Lincoln Street in Blair.

Randall died shortly after the accident. Miss Kult was given emergency treatment and a spleen operation was performed the same evening. Her condition was last reported as being “stable.”

The accident reportedly took place as the Suverkrubbe auto approached the crossing from the north going south. The train engineer said that he thought the car was going to be able to stop in time, but then speeded up and proceeded across the tracks. The engine hit the auto on the drivers side just behind the door. The auto was flipped off onto a side track and the train proceeded west for one block before coming to a stop. The single-light crossing signal was working.
