Cunningham was born February 7, 1914 to Ralph and Martha (Held) Cunningham at the family farm home in North Star, Nebraska. The eldest of eight of eight children, he attended the St. Paul elementary school and graduated from Fullerton High School. As a young man he farmed with his father until the outbreak of World War II.

Cunningham entered military service on February 14, 1941, and served with the First Armored Division in Africa and Italy as a tank commander. He was awarded the Silver Star for valor and the Purple Heart for wounds received in Cisterna, Italy. Prior to his discharge he was awarded the WWII Victory medal, American Campaign Medal, the Europe, Africa and Middle East Theatre Ribbon with three battle stars, the Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Ribbon.

On June 9, 1946 he married Lucille Dorothy Brockman in Fullerton. The family moved to Wayne where he was employed with the Department of Agriculture. The Cunninghams lived in Blair from 1963 until 1971. He retired from the Civil Service in 1971 and moved to Colorado Springs where he began a real estate business.

He served his community in various capacities. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and served as President of the Church Council, as Finance Secretary and Sunday School Superintendent. He served on the Board of Directors for the Fremont, Nebraska Children’s Home and Society.

Upon retirement he moved to Leisure World in Mesa, Arizona.

He is survived by his wife Lucille and son Mark Allan, both of Colorado Springs, two sisters Esther Erickson of Kearney and Arlene Louden of Laguna Beach, California.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Ann Lucille; a son Terry Lee; four brothers, Norman, Alva, Ivan and Chester and one sister Ruth Mullens.
