Marijo King was born March 7, 1929, in the family farm home near Westminster, S.C., to Jessie Brownlee and Maderia (Alexander) King. She was baptized at and attended the Coneross Baptist Church there. She grew up in a community of relatives, and attended grade school in Westminster, and during her high school years, she spent the summers living in a boarding house in Atlanta, Ga., while working in a Sears store. She graduated from high school in Walhalla, S.C.

She met her husband-to-be while she was working in Harpers 5 & 10 in Walhalla. He was a Nebraskan who, while on vacation with his friends, went into the store to make a purchase. Eventually, on April 9, 1950, she married Norman Kruger in Walhalla, and they made their home on his family farm place in rural Arlington, in the Telbasta area. They spent their married years on this farm until 1979, when they moved one-quarter mile south to another house. Mrs. Kruger lived there until becoming a resident of Merrick Manor in Fremont. She had worked at Camp Fontanelle for 25 years, and for many years she operated ‘My Own touch’ catering service.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fremont. She also belonged to the Pleasant Hour Club and to SMILES (of Hooper).

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, LuAnn and Chris Ruwe of Hooper; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Jana Kruger and John and JaNelle Kruger, all of Arlington; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy ‘Dot’ Harmon and Vivian Smith, both of Columbia, S.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, in March of 1990; grandson, James Kruger; great-granddaughter, Madison Ness; and a sister, Sally Ruth King.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or to the donor’s choice.
