Herbert C Suhr, 88

Herbert C. Suhr, 88, of Creighton, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at Creighton Area Health Services.

Funeral services were Dec. 20 at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Creighton. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Creighton, with military honors conducted by VFW Post No. 1151 and American Legion Post 74 of Creighton.

Herbert C. Suhr was born April 22, 1920, northeast of Creighton, to Albert and Marie (Sonder) Suhr. He attended the German Lutheran School and rural public school at Bazile Mills.

He entered the United States Army in October of 1942. He served in the European Theater as a staff sergeant with the 12th Armored Division in the 42nd Tank Battalion. He was discharged in February of 1946.

On April 25, 1948, he married Betty J. McManigal at Christ Lutheran Church in Bazile Mills.

Mr. Suhr lived in Creighton and worked for the REA for 15 years. He then became part owner/operator of the Creighton Livestock Market for 15 years. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Suhr moved to Norfolk in 1977, where he worked for a number of years for the State of Nebraska and Hy-Vee. They returned to Creighton in 2005.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Bazile Mills and had served as a church elder and was also a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Norfolk for 28 years. He was a life member of the VFW and American Legion Post, past Post Commander, and former council member for the city of Creighton.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; children and spouses: Gene and Ann Suhr, Richard and Julie Suhr, all of Creighton; Lee and Carol Suhr of Blair, and Kim and Kurt Burkhalter of Omaha; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers and sister-in-law, Carl Suhr of Hershey and Allen and Barbara Suhr of Egg Harbor, N.J., and a brother-in-law, Wilbur Placek of Creighton.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Placek.
