Bazil N. Lazure had a passion for science, teaching, hunting, fishing and the environment.

The Creighton University professor emeritus took a personal approach to teaching, making himself available at odd hours to tutor struggling students, said his son Bazil Kenneth Lazure of Beaver Lake near Plattsmouth, Neb.

Many of his students in the 1950s to the 1970s went on to become physicians, dentists and teachers.

Creighton established a Bazil Lazure scholarship for science students in 2003 to honor Lazure, who died Thursday at his Omaha home. The 96-year-old had suffered a minor heart attack, then developed pneumonia, his son said.

A funeral mass was held Monday.

Lazure earned the first Father Wagner Award for his work in the physics department. He also helped start science fairs at public and private elementary schools.

Lazure was active in two Catholic parishes, St. Cecilia Cathedral and St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Lazure and his wife of more than 65 years, Geraldine, were active in Creighton’s JayBackers organization.

During retirement, he was able to devote more time to hunting and fishing.

Born and raised in the Blair area, Lazure served as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Okinawa.

Survivors also include his wife; sons Leroy A. Lazure and Robert Donald Lazure, both of Omaha; daughters, Geraldine J. Chase of Omaha and Linda Scheeler of Prior Lake, Minn.; a brother, Charles Lazure of Omaha; and 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
