Lester D. Kuhl, 53

Lester D. Kuhl, 53, of Bennington, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 29, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington with the Rev. James Price officiating. Interment was in the Flower Hill Cemetery in Omaha, with military honors provided by the Bennington American Legion Post. No. 266.

Lester Dale Kuhl was born June 22, 1949, in Wahoo to Hans and Eleanor (Peetz) Kuhl. He grew up in Herman and Bennington, and attended country grade school at both Dornacker and Hill Creek schools, and graduated from Bennington High School in 1968.

He spent a great deal of his time helping with chores on the family farm, but in his spare time, he was active in 4-H and participated in football, basketball and baseball.

After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served from 1969 to 1970, with much of his time in Vietnam. He later transferred to the Reserves, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 20, 1974.

On March 25, 1974, he married Mary Klabunde at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington. The couple had three children and have lived for the past 30 years in Bennington.

Mr. Kuhl was a carpenter his whole life. Early on, he worked for other contractors, but for the last 20 years he was self-employed. He enjoyed turkey hunting, John Wayne movies, playing cards and dominoes, and watching the Atlanta Braves. Most of all, he loved to be with his children, coaching baseball and softball for many years.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington, the Bennington Lions Club, and Bennington American Legion Post No. 266, recently serving as post commander. His family remembers him as a kind man who loved to spend time with children and who was always available to help his friends with their projects.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mary; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Cathy Kuhl of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Jerry and Amy Kuhl of Bennington; daughter, Kathie Kuhl of Bennington; father, Hans Kuhl of Blair; brother, Dan Kuhl of Blair; sisters, Carol Kuhl of Blair, Diane Campbell of Holt, Mo., and Janice Schwennen of Jesup, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor, and brother, Kenneth.

Haden-Golden-Reichmuth Funeral Home in Bennington was in charge of arrangements.
