Viola Kuhls, 99

Washington County native Viola Kuhls, 99, of Fremont, died Jan. 21, 2004, at the A. J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan 26, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont. Interment was in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery east of Winslow.

Viola Kuhls was born Oct. 20, 1904, to Henry and Louise (Stork) Kuhls, in Washington County, near Herman.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, east of Winslow. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School, then the Hancock School (later known as the Brandert School.)

She worked at home on the farm until she and her mother moved into Fremont in 1955. Then she worked in the Kelly Grocery Store at 4th and Bell streets. She moved to Omaha in 1956, and worked briefly at the Goldstein Chapmans store. Then until retiring, she worked for Chiles and Co., a stockbroker. In her retirement years, she worked part-time at Younkers. For many years, she also volunteered with Lutheran Family Services; her efforts were recognized with an award.

In 1993, she moved back to Fremont with her sister, Esther, where they became residents of Nye Square Retirement Center.

She is survived by her two nieces and their families, Loretta Hoegemeyer of Hooper, and Ardeth and Don Sperling of Arlington, two nephews and their families, Kenneth and Ruth Bartling of Brownsville, Texas, and Virgil and Marilyn Kuhls of Milwaukee, Ore.; and 13 great nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Lutheran Family Services, Trinity Lutheran Church, or the donor’s choice.

FUNERAL 10:30 Mon., Trinity Lutheran Church, Fremont. Burial Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hooper. VISITATION at Mortuary Sun. 2-8 pm, with family 2-3 pm. Memorials to Lutheran Family Services, Trinity Lutheran Church, Fremont & donor’s choice.
