Elmer Betts Succumbs To Heart Attack

Elmer (Slim) Betts, long-time resident of Blair, was the victim if a fatal heart attack Wednesday, September 12th. He had been under a doctor’s care for heart problems for a number of weeks.

Mr. Betts, who had been a foreman for the Blair Redi-Mix Company, had retired from that work due to ill health more than a year ago and had, apparently been making some recovery. The attack which took his life struck him shortly before noon Wednesday and he was found on the floor of his home by his wife, Harriet when she returned at noon. Mrs. Betts is employed at the County Treasurer’s office at the Courthouse.

Elmer Betts was the son of Henry and Mary Betts. He was born November 27, 1909 at Tekamah. The family moved to Blair when he was a boy.

On June 29, 1940, he was married to Harriet Christensen, at Tekamah, but they have lived in Blair all of their married life. He became associated with Blair Redi-Mix when the company was formed a number of years ago. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Blair Aerie.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet, by a son, Larry, of Blair and by a daughter, Mrs. Duane (Karen) Nielsen, of Fremont. He has three brothers William, of Blair, Andrew of Council Bluffs, and Floyd, of Blair. There are four sisters surviving. They are Mrs. Tom Smith (Dora) of Blair; Mrs. Earl (Clara) McMurtrie, of Fremont; Mrs. Emmett (Marie) Steffen, of Missouri Valley and Mrs. Albert (Avis) Edie of Council Bluffs.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the First Lutheran Church, the Rev. Robert Albers conducting the service. Burial was made in the Blair Cemetery under the direction of the Campbell Mortuary.

Pallbearers were J.B. Long, Garland Runyan, John Lutz, Clifford Moller, Henry T. Smith and Tom Cochran.
