Marie Sophia was born in Douglas County, Nebraska on January 9, 1906, the daughter of John and Wilhelmina Voss Brekenfeld. She grew up and attended schools in Nebraska and South Dakota. Marie died February 24, 1989. Services were on February 26 at Casey, Iowa.

On January 9, 1929 she was married to Morton Sunds at Omaha, Nebraska. They farmed near Washington, Nebraska for several years and moved to the Casey area in 1941 where they farmed until moving to Casey in 1968. Morton preceded her in death on October 6, 1971.

Marie had been a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church since being confirmed in 1945; was active in the Ladies Aid, and was a member of the Never Idle Club. She had been a resident of the Adair Community Health Center since 1983.

Surviving are one son, Warren Sunds and his wife, Marlene of Casey; three daughters, Darlene Bassett and her husband Merle of Casey, Marilyn Warner and her husband Don of Casey, and Kay White and her husband Richard of Atlantic; 11 grandchildren: Douglas Bassett of Okoboji, David Bassett of West Des Moines, Gregory Bassett of Storm Lake, Brenda Simmons of Casey, Glenda Warner of Des Moines, Alan Warner of Maryville, Missouri, Martin Sunds of Fontanelle, Benett Sunds of Maryville, Missouri, Carrie Sunds of Casey, Randall White of Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, and Scott White of Omaha. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren: Nicholas Bassett, Alex Bassett and Tyler Simmons; two brothers; three sisters; nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, two brothers and two sisters.
