Oldest Bennington Resident Dies

Bennington’s oldest resident, Mrs. Thomine (nee Huam) Sunds, died last Friday at the age of 94 years. She had been a resident of the vicinity since 1894 and had lived in retirement in Bennington since 1943.

Mrs. Sunds was born December 23, 1872 in Denmark. In 1894 she was married to Christ J. Sunds in Denmark and the young couple sailed immediately for the United States. Arriving in New York, they came at once to Blair where they settled on a farm. They farmed until 1932 when they moved to the village of Washington, Nebraska. In 1936 Mr. Sunds died. After that she lived for a short time in Benson and then moved to Bennington in 1943.

Mrs. Sunds maintained her membership in the Washington Ladies Aid.

Mrs. Sunds was preceded in death by her husband, Chris, and one infant son, Einar, who died in 1908. Sh is survived by three sons: Jim, of Bennington; Martin H. of Casey, Iowa, and Albert C. Sunds, of Arlington. There are three daughters, Elvera (Mrs. Henry Tietgen) of Blair, Frieda (Mrs. William Wiese) of Omaha, and Erna (Mrs. William Matzen) of Denver. There are 18 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A brother, Paul Huam, lives in Denmark.

Services were held Sunday, February 5th at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington with Pastor Norman E. Schroeder in charge. Interment was in Prairie View cemetery with the Haden-Golden Mortuary in charge.
