#1-Willard Crowell Killed By Dive

Youth Fatally Hurt As Dives Into Shallow Water At Carter Lake

Fatally injured when he dived from a high pier into four feet of water at Carter Lake during a swimming party shortly after midnight Saturday, Willard Crowell, 19, of 404 north 20th street, Omaha, a former Blair youth, died Sunday evening at Nicholas Senn hospital. He suffered a broken neck in the mishap.

The after-midnight swim resulted in leg injuries to a companion, Armand Glorin, 26, of Omaha. Mr. Glorin went into the water when his friend failed to come up after diving from a fishing pier. Struggling in the water, the two were pulled ashore by four friends who had accompanied them on the drive to Carter Lake. The four, who had not gone into the water, were George and Gwendolyn Tyrell, 19 and 16 respectively; Eleanor and Catherine Moore, 16 and 14, all of 2029 north 19th street.

Mr. Glorin, a former Fort Omaha soldier, took Crowell to the Fort Omaha hospital. A doctor called a police ambulance to remove him to Nicholas Senn.

Crowell, a WPA worker recently, had supported his mother, Mrs. Edith Crowell, and sister, Maxine, 14. Besides his mother and sister, he is survived by his father, Ben Crowell, and three brothers, Sam, Orval and Kenneth.

While attending Blair high school, he stayed here at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. E. J. Mundorf, on east Grant street.

The body lay in state at the Brailey & Dorrance mortuary in Omaha until noon yesterday and then was brought to Blair for funeral services at the Baptist church. Burial was in Blair cemetery.
