George Durand

George H. Durand, 96, of Fremont passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Arbor Manor in Fremont.

George was born Dec. 6, 1917, to Hugh and Nellie M. (Callaway) Durand on a farm near St. Edward. He was raised in Fremont and attended the Fremont Public Schools. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served in the Blair CCC camp from 1936 to 1938. He then went to Wyoming to work on a ranch for a year and then moved to Oregon and worked there until 1940 when he came back to Fremont. He joined the National Guard serving from Sept. 4, 1940, until Oct. 10, 1945 during World War II. On Dec. 23, 1940, the National Guard mobilized and was taken into the regular army. He served in England, France, Normandy and Germany. He married Lorretta Sadie Louise Kuhlmann on Feb 14, 1946, at Tekamah. She died June 30, 1995.

George married Hazel Kaspar on Dec. 26, 1998, in Fremont. She died Aug. 2, 2007. He was employed by Grant Chevrolet and Al Pimper Plymouth, both in Fremont, as an auto body technician for 33 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont where he was church sexton for five years, Eagles Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Association of Retired Persons and was active in Theo.

He is survived by his son, Donald Durand of Fremont; daughter, Mary Ann (and husband, Robert Jr.) Sekera of Modale, Iowa; stepdaughter, Kathy (and husband, Ron) Baum of Fremont; ten step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two stepfathers; and three sisters, Fern Jenkins, Eunice Dewey and Shirley Knowlton.

Funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Salem Lutheran Church, Fremont. The Rev. Michael Thomas will officiate. Visitation 4-8 p.m. Wednesday Moser Memorial Capel with family receiving friends 5-7 and 1 hour prior to service at the church. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery with military honors conducted by Fremont Honor Guard of VFW Post 854 and American Legion Post 20.
