Jessie D. Christopher, 81

Jessie D. Christopher, 81, of Blair, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 3, at First United Methodist Church in Blair. Private burial will be in the Blair Cemetery.

Visitation began Thursday, March 2, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Jessie Darline Christopher was born Dec. 25, 1924, to Roscoe and Gladys (Jernberg) Blake on a farm north of Gregory, S.D., where her grandparents homesteaded their land under the Homestead Act.

She met John Christopher in Gregory before graduating from Gregory High School in 1942. During World War II, she worked at the Oregon shipyards in Portland, Ore., while John was stationed in the army at Ft. Lewis, Wash. They were married on Dec. 18, 1944, in Tacoma, Wash., and soon after moved to Blair where they have resided for 60 years.

Mrs. Christopher began working as bookkeeper/secretary for Vinton Motor Company in Blair in the early 1960s and continued on there when it was purchased by Sid Dillon in 1993. Up until her death, she still enjoyed going there every morning. She loved her wonderful Sid Dillon family and enjoyed seeing all the people that came in.

She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church. She spent many years serving as church secretary, church hostess and was a member of WSCS and United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of PEO Chapter HL. As a 27-year member, she served in various offices, including president of her chapter.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Christopher had many interests and was very involved in a variety of activities. She loved people, greatly enjoyed music, was a talented artist and enjoyed giving informative programs on one of her many collections.

She is survived by her husband, John; a son, Gary Christopher of Arlington; a daughter, Laurie Christopher of Blair; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Duane L. and Marilyn Blake of Ft. Collins, Colo.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ray and Twila Kumm of Eugene, Ore., and Richard and Mavis Bowen of Los Alamitos, Calif.

She was preceded in death by a 6-year-old brother, Howard, and a 3-year-old sister, Shirley.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Blair.
