John W. Hineline was born July 15, 1860 on a farm near old DeSoto, Nebraska. He was the oldest son in a family of seven. His parents, Catherine Oberst and Solomon Hineline came to DeSoto in the fifties.

During his boyhood Mr. Hineline attended school at old DeSoto. As a young man he homesteaded near Hemingford, Nebraska, but after a few years returned to DeSoto where he spent the remainder of his life farming a part of the same farm on which he was born.

John Hineline married Edith Gutschow of Blair on Febr. 15, 1898. To them were born two children. The elder, John Vernon preceded his father in death on Febr. 5, 1915.

Besides his wife and daughter, Olive he is survived by one grandchild, three brothers, Frank, Charles and Solomon, all of DeSoto, and one sister, Mrs. H. E. Fancher, of Longview, Washington.

Those who knew him will always remember him as an honest sturdy pioneer. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints for over forty years.

Although ailing somewhat for several years he was active in his work about the farm until the spring of 1937.

He passed from this life on January 16, 1938 at the age of 77 years, 6 months and 1 day.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 19 from the Baptist Church, the Rev. Carl Self, of Omaha officiating. Burial was in the Blair Cemetery.

John Hineline, a native born pioneer of DeSoto, died at his home in that neighborhood Sunday, January 16, at the age of 78 years. Up until a couple of months ago he had been able to attend to some of his farm work, but for the past few weeks he had been confined to his bed. He was the eldest son of Solomon Hineline, Sr., who came to DeSoto from Ohio on May 31, 1855, and who died in 1896. John Hineline as were all his brothers and his sister was born on the farm now occupied by Solomon Hineline, Jr. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. R. C. Busch, of Omaha. A son died in 1915. Three brothers and one sister also survive: Solomon, Charles and Frank, all of DeSoto, and Mrs. marry Fancher of Longview, Wash.

Mr. Hineline typified the splendid character of the early settlers of Nebraska. He was a good citizen, parent, friend and neighbor, and his kindly presence will indeed be missed in this community where he was born and lived so long and usefully.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Blair yesterday afternoon, with burial in the Blair Cemetery.
