James Skinner

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, 1987, at the United Methodist Church in Herman for James Skinner, 90, Herman.

He passed away on Saturday evening, May 16, 1987, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Rev. Larry G. Orvis officiated at the service with Mrs. Grace Husk as organist and Orval Roach as vocalist.

Casket bearers were Russell Lang, Leonard Loftis Jr., Don Hovendick, Bruce Skinner, John Shamburg, Jim Skinner and Bill Shamburg.

Interment was in the Herman Cemetery.

James Skinner was born on December 29, 1896 to John and Minnie (Wilson) Skinner at Spiker, where his parents owned the Spiker Store and operated the Post Office.

In 1900, the family moved to the farm on Davis Creek, two and one-half miles northwest of Herman, where James lived and farmed for most of his lifetime.

He attended the Davis School.

In 1918, when his father died during the influenza epidemic and his older brother was killed in France during World War I, James took over the responsibilities of the family farm and six younger brothers and sisters.

He is survived by two brothers: William Skinner of Ramona, California and Robert Skinner of Herman; three sisters: Jessie Shamburg of Herman, Mabel Hovendick of Blair and Elizabeth Lang of Uehling; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Tom Skinner and a sister, Mary Loftis.
