Long-Time Herman Resident Passes Away

John Skinner, well known farmer living two miles northwest of Herman, passed away May 2 at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. He was born September 6, 1892 at Spiker, Nebraska where his father operated a general store. In 1900 the family moved to the Herman vicinity and for the past 61 years Mr. Skinner had lived on his present farm. John Skinner was well known as a sheep and poultry breeder.

He was a charter member of the Jackson-Peck Post #274 of the American Legion having served as its Commander, Chaplain and holding various other offices. He served seven terms (28 years) as a member of the Burt County Board of Supervisors and 34 years as Treasurer of the local school board.

In 1914 he married Emma Louise Hovendick of Blair who passed away in 1959. One son, John L. (Middleton, Wisconsin) and 2 grandchildren, John L. Jr (Madison, Wisconsin) and Janice M. Mitchell (Minneapolis, Minnesota) survive from that union.

In 1960 John Skinner married Esther Porter Palmer of Tekamah who survives him as do her 3 daughters, Mrs. Margaret Saxton (Somers, Iowa), Mrs. Eileen Pierson (Battleground, Washington) and Mrs. Jo Norman (Council Bluffs, Iowa); 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

John Skinner was the oldest of 9 children and is survived by 3 brothers, James and Robert of Herman and William of Ramona, California, and 3 sisters, Jessie (Mrs. Waldo)Shamburg of Herman, Mabel (Mrs. Lester) Hovendick of Blair and Elizabeth (Mrs. Richard) Lang of Uehling.
