Lt. Col. Robert F. Reel, U.S. Army (Ret.), 85, of Omaha, Neb., died Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Visitation: Saturday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m. to noon at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley.

Graveside Services: Saturday, Jan. 30, 1 p.m., Rose Hill Memorial Garden, Missouri Valley.

Gathering of friends and family: At Christian Center in Missouri Valley from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30.

On Feb. 21, 1930, Bob Reel was born in Missouri Valley to Gladys Bovey Reel and Fletcher L. Reel. In 1942, he made his profession of faith in the Christian Church in Missouri Valley.

On Dec. 21, 1952, he married Joy Currie in the Methodist Church. They have three children, W.F. “Butch” Reel and wife, Erin, and children John, Andy, and Bovey; Julie Reel Steen and family; and Dr. Jill S. Reel (Burianek) and husband, Jeff, and children Brooke and Nick. He is also survived by his brother Dwight “Doc” Reel and his wife, Margaret.

Upon graduating from Missouri Valley High School in 1948, Bob enlisted in and served in the United States Air Force in the Korean War as a radio operator stationed in Japan and learned to speak Japanese. After his enlistment, he enrolled in Iowa State University, graduating in 1956. He and the family returned to the family farm south of Missouri Valley, and he also worked on the railroad. He also served in the Army Reserves and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1983.

In 1967, Bob and Joy left the farm, and he was employed with the Federal Land Bank (Farm Credit Bank) of Omaha where he worked until 1989. He also worked at the World Bank in Albania for two years. For twenty years he took volunteer assignments for the United States Agency for International Development. On several of these trips Joy accompanied him.
