Obituary printed in the Dec. 19, 1917 Pilot, Blair, Nebraska

Franklin Harriman, a pioneer resident of Blair, died December 10th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.C. Purcell in Detroit, Michigan. He was taken to Wauwatosa, Michigan, for burial by the side of his wife, who died there in 1895. Mr. Harriman had been in failing health for the past six months but frequently expressed the wish to live until his 80th birthday, which was granted him, his birthday being on November 7th. His daughters, Mrs. George F. Leonard, of Seattle, Washington, and Miss Lucia B. Harriman, New York City, both arrived in time to spend that day with him and help care for him through subsequent weeks in which he gradually grew weaker until the end came peacefully on Dec. 10th. Mr. Harriman was born in Lockport, New York, moving to Wisconsin with his parents when a lad of six, where he spent his youth. He came to Blair in the early days and for twenty-five years was a prominent factor in the life of the town and county, which latter he served for two terms as county treasurer and later as sheriff. The family removed to Milwaukee in 1893, where two years later, Mrs. Harriman died. During the gold rush to Alaska Mr. Harriman owned the trail going over Chilcoot pass, and in his early manhood he crossed the plains to Colorado three times before the railroads were built. For over fifty-nine years he had been a Mason, having retained his membership in the Blair Commandery to the end. An upright and loyal citizen, a generous friend and a tender and devoted husband and father, he will be greatly missed.
