Duane A. Harris, 88

Duane A. Harris, 88, died Sunday, April 23, 2006, at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair.

Services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, April 26, at First United Methodist Church in Blair. His cremains will be buried in the Blair Cemetery. There is no visitation.

Duane A. Harris was born March 25, 1918 in Dodge to Frank and Igernia (Wallace) Harris. He was a graduate of Dodge High School.

He attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, and taught school for two years.

He married Loretta Lhotak in 1943 at Fort Reno, Okla., while serving in the Army during World War II. She died in 1969. He married Lois O’Neill in 1971 at First United Methodist Church in Blair.

After the war, Mr. Harris returned to Fremont for two years before moving to Blair in 1947. He enjoyed playing softball and played on a traveling team and the city league in Blair. He was an avid golfer and played in the golf league in Blair.

He opened the Harris Shoe Store and Blair Bootery in 1948 and operated them until 1992.

He was a member of the Blair VFW and the American Legion. He was a member of the Blair Chamber of Commerce and, with Buck Burke, started the Gateway to the West event in 1964.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, sons and daughters-in-law, David and Kay Harris of Scottsdale, Ariz., Douglas and Patricia Harris of Lenexa, Kan.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Charles and Linda Gardner of Lawton, Iowa, and Eugene Gardner of San Francisco, Calif.; six step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, William.

Memorials are suggested to Crowell Home or Hospice.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
