Edwin Lawrence Hamilton

Edwin L. Hamilton, 88, of Holdrege, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at the Christian Homes in Holdrege. Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 3, at the First Baptist Church in Holdrege, with interment at the Prairie Home Cemetery.

Edwin L. Hamilton was born Sept. 7, 1917, at Denison, Iowa, to Rev. Charles and Ruth (Campbell) Hamilton. He graduated from Belle Fourche (S.D.) High School in 1935. As a young man, he worked as an electrician’s apprentice and a lumberjack, then attended school at Sioux Falls College for two years before transferring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he graduated in 1942 with a degree in electrical engineering.

On Jan. 1 1942, he married Helen McMillan at Blair. The couple made their home in Pennsylvania, where Mr. Hamilton worked for Westinghouse Electric Company. In 1945, the family moved to Hastings, where he was employed by Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District. The family later moved to Gothenburg and later, Holdrege, where Mr. Hamilton supervised the Kingsley Dam Hydro Plant prior to his retirement in 1965.

He was an active member of the Baptist churches in communities where they lived, serving as deacon, Sunday School superintendent, and singing in the choir.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Hamilton and Irvin “Jack” White of Waterloo, and Nancy and Eric Otte of Valley Center Kan.; two grandsons; four great-grandson; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Willie Ruth Hamilton of San Antonio, Texas, Robert and Donna Hamilton of Arvada, Colo., and Charles and Dot Hamilton of Omaha; sister-in-law, Beryl McMillan of Chico, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Hamilton, and two brothers-in-law, Robert McMillan and Bert McMillan.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Holdrege.
