Donald E. Hammer, 81, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at his home in Herman.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home, with military graveside services in the Blair Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Donald Eugene Hammer was born July 22, 1926, at Modale, Iowa, to Devie and Meta (Parker) Hammer. He attended schools in Modale Consolidated; Missouri Valley, Iowa; Strahan Consolidated; and attended Omaha Technical High School, and Pinchney Michigan High School. He received his high school diploma from Blair High School in 1999.

In September of 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was assigned to Company I Infantry Special Forces unit. He was stationed on Cebu in the Philippines where he was in charge of operations and maintenance. In May of 1946, he re-enlisted and served in the Philippines until he was discharged in June 1947. After he was discharged, he returned to Hell, Mich., and worked at machine shops fabricating special jigs and fixtures for the auto industry.

He returned to Omaha in November of 1947 and worked for Union Pacific Railroad, and in 1949 went to work for Omaha Public Power.

On March 3, 1972, he married Sue Ellen Nohrenberg Taylor. They built a home in rural Herman in 1973 and resided there at the time of his death.

Mr. Hammer was a life member of the National Rifle Association, field support team member, Nebraska Hunter Safety instructor, Boy Scouts leader, and was a member of the Norfolk American Legion Post No. 0016.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Ellen; sons and daughter-in-law, Peter and Ronna Hammer of Blair, and D.J. Hammer of Omaha; daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Charles Moriarty of Bennington, and Jean and John Livingston of Nebraska City; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elga Meyer of Howells, Mich.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Washington County 4-H shooter sports or the Washington County Veterans Tribute Plaza in Blair.
