Damon J. Cornwell, 97

Damon J. Cornwell, 97, of rural Washington County, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007.

A funeral Mass was held Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair. Interment was in Blair’s Holy Cross Cemetery.

Damon John Cornwell was born in Payola, Kan., to Jessie and Lena (Otte) Cornwell, but lived most of his life in Douglas and Washington counties.

On Sept. 24, 1941, he married Irene Happ. The couple lived near 102nd and Maple streets in Omaha before purchasing their farm in 1946. The Cornwells lived for more than 60 years at his farm near the now closed Wranch School in Southern Washington County.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Joyce Cornwell, who live near their parents’ farm; a daughter, Joan Shuminski of Omaha; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, who died Aug. 16, 2007; a son, Steven Cornwell; and a brother, George Cornwell.

All memorials sent to the family will be donated to the Fort Calhoun Rural Fire Department, or St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
