Washington County native Ethel A. Smith, 101, of Fremont, died Feb. 3, 2011, at the Hooper Care Center.

Services were Thursday, Feb. 10, at the First United Methodist Church in Fremont. Interment was in the Herman Cemetery.

Ethel A. Meierhenry was born June 12, 1909, in Washington County, in the Spiker area, to Henry and Frieda Meierhenry. She grew up there and graduated from high school in Arlington.

On Oct. 30, 1932, she married Clinton Smith. They farmed in Washington County for more than 50 years near Herman.

Her husband died in 1986. Mrs. Smith later moved to Fremont and lived in the Deerfield Apartments, Nye Square and Nye Court, before moving to the Hooper Care Center in 2002.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fremont, and was a member of the Red Hat Ladies of the Hooper Care Center. She had been a member of her former rural neighborhood Jolly Workers Club, and Church Women #2 of the Herman Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Judith Smith Hilgenkamp and husband, Robert Hilgenkamp of Fremont; two grandsons and their wives, Todd and Shari Smith of Herman and their children, Katelyn and Ryan, and Brent and Becky Smith of McCallsburg, Iowa, and their children, Shelby and Nolan; granddaughters, Megan Smith of Hooper and Amber Smith of Fremont; nephews and wives, Vern and Mary Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Richard and Carole Meierhenry of Phoenix, Ariz.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald G. Smith; sister, Hattie Molbig; an infant sister; and a brother, Walter Meierhenry.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Fremont.

Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.
