Herman native Bernard L. Hansen, 79, died April 12, 2009, at his home in Blackfoot, Idaho.

Funeral services were Thursday, April 16, at Hawker Funeral Home. Interment was in the Grove City Cemetery. A tribute of affection was provided by the Elks B.P.O.E No. 1416, and military honor guard was provided by the Hawkbill Base, U.S. submarine veterans, Stewart Hoover Post No. 23.

Bernard “Ben” Leslie Hansen was born May 23, 1929, in Herman to George William and Elfreda Bertha (Fransen) Hansen. He graduated from Herman High school.

He served in the United States Navy form 1947 until 1967. He was over the nuclear reactor in many submarines for the Navy, including the Nautilus, specializing in electronics. He made his career in the navy and later worked at INEL until 1979.

Mr. Hansen had lived in Blackfoot sine 1961.

In 1950, he married Connie Huddleston in Portsmouth, N. H. They later divorced. On Feb. 10, 1973, he married Shirley Dyer Jones in Blackfoot.

He was a member of the Lutheran congregation, a life member of the Elks and American Legion.

He took pride in growing a huge garden and then donating it to the senior citizen’s center and his neighbors. He also enjoyed woodworking, snowmobiling, cooking and spending time at his cabin in Island Park, and visiting with friends.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Blackfoot; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Colleen Hansen of Lava Hot Springs, Idaho; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Geri Hansen of Salem, Ore., Brenda and Douglas Coats of Bend Ore.; stepdaughters and spouses, Kathy and Mike Jones of Idaho Falls, and Sheri and Boyd Schiess of Logan, Utah; best friends, Merrill and Holley Ashley; sister, Irma Prien of Lyons; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lee and sister, Georgia.
