Paul Stoltenberg

Calhoun, Neb, June 14, 1900

Mr. Paul Stoltenberg, an old German Settler, died suddenly at his home, northwest of here, on Tuesday. Mr. Stoltenberg was born 11 February 1825 and came here in 1855. He laid out and started eight farms, which now are part of this place and the nearest adjoining farms. He removed to his late home some eight or ten years after coming here. He was connected with the State Agriculture society, also the county fairs. Mr. Stoltenberg had a large and choice selection of flowers. He has been connected with the floral department of the state. Mr. Stoltenberg leaves a wife and six children. He was 76 years old, the funeral services were held yesterday from the home. He came to the United States in 1849.

Perhaps in all the state of Nebraska there was not a better loved German citizen than the hear home and flower loving Grandfather Paul Stoltenberg who was buried in the Fort Calhoun cemetery June 13, 1900. He came to Fort Calhoun in 1856 and in company with the late Hans Rohwer bought the George Holman claim, and settled where now lives Henry Frahm and for years had a mania for opening and building up new farms. Among others, he also owned the Rathman farm, Peter Klindt farm, John Sierk farm and what is now the Hillside Stock farm, afterwards moving to a raw prairie farm just over in Douglas county that he made one of the most beautiful and productive in that section. Our Mrs. Woods when living, used to claim that a visit from Grandpa Stoltenberg always left a benediction in the household. His aged wife survives him and his living children are Mrs. William Kruse, Mrs. Charles Voss and four grownup sons. Over forty carriages were at the funeral, Rev. Erbe of Omaha, a Lutheran minister officiating. Also surviving Mrs. H. Melotz (Amelia).
