MRS. MARTINUS HANSEN DIED FRIDAY MORNING

Mrs. Martinus (Eskelsen) Hansen, a resident of Blair for the past 23 years, died at the Good Shepherd Home in Blair last Friday morning, Sept. 1. She was born in Omaha, March 15, 1895 and was 77 years of age at the time of her death.

Later the Eskelsen family moved to a farm near Moorhead, Iowa. She had been baptized into the Lutheran faith. As a youth she was confirmed in her Christian faith in the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead.

On April 6, 1924, she united in marriage to Martinus Hansen at Bethesda. Three children were born to this union: Mildred, Mrs. Norman Johnson; Arlene, who died in her ninth year; and one son, John.

The Hansens farmed near Moorhead until 1950 when they moved to Blair. Here they became active members of First Lutheran Congregation. Johanne Eskelsen Hansen was active in the Danish Ladies Aid and in the Lutheran Church Women. She and her husband were also members of the Bible Study Group.

Mrs. Hansen, together with her husband, expressed and demonstrated a keen interest in and a love for students at Dana College. For many years they had students in their home. She went out of her way to show them kindness, always doing favors for them. She believed in “doing for others.”

Two years ago this coming February, she had the misfortune of breaking her hip in a fall. After several months’ stay in the Blair Hospital, she moved to the Good Shepherd Home where she required nursing care.

A year ago last July they sold their property and home. Martinus then moved to the Good Shepherd Home also. The First Lutheran Congregation purchased their home which is now the parsonage for the assistant pastor.

About two weeks ago, Mrs. Hansen suffered a severe stroke from which she could not recover. She slipped away peacefully last Friday morning.

Her parents, a daughter, Arlene, and a brother, Edward, preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn her passing: Her husband, Martinus; one daughter, Mildred, Mrs. Norman Johnson of Anoka, Minn.; one son John, of Belmont, Calif.; two granddaughters, Marta and Jolene Johnson of Anoka; one brother, Elmer Eskelsen, Moorhead, Iowa; six nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at First Lutheran Church in Blair Monday, September 4, 1972. Burial was made in the Blair Cemetery under the direction of the Bendorf Funeral Home.
