Funeral services were held for John Hansen at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington on Wednesday, November 21, 1984 at 11:00 a.m. with Norman E. Schroeder, Pastor, officiating. Special music was provided by Ken and Miriam Sukraw, soloist and organist. Pallbearers were Darrell Braesch, Arvid Braesch, Fred Kolund, Clarence Kolund, Lars Pedersen and Joseph Gibbs.

Interment was in the family plot at Mt. Hope Cemetery, 7602 Military Avenue, Omaha, Nebraska. The Haden-Golden Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

John Sophus Hansen, son of Johannes Frederik and Anna Marie (Nielsen) Hansen, was born October 5, 1904, near Irvington, Nebraska. His boyhood was spent north of Irvington on the family farm. He attended school in District 30. John was baptized March 11, 1928, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Florence and then confirmed his faith as an adult at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha on April 20, 1932. He transferred his membership to St. John’s of Bennington where he continued in active communing and faithful support throughout his life.

On August 31, 1932, he was united in marriage to Helen Marie Braesch, and to this union three sons were born. The couple farmed in the Bennington community except for a few years when they lived near Waterloo and Irvington. John retired from farming in 1974 and moved to Bennington. For the past ten years he was a faithful and caring grounds-keeper at St. John’s Lutheran Church, giving much of his time as a labor of love. He was also an active participant in the Keenager group of the church, and the Over-Sixty Center.

John passed away suddenly on November 18, 1984, from a heart attack. He died at Immanuel Medical Center. He attained the age of 80 years, 1 month and 14 days. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen on January 4, 1972; his parents; three brother, Hans, Fred, and Jim; two sisters, Anna Jensen and Mary Kolund Gibbs; and infant twin grandchildren.

Those left to love his memory are his three sons and their wives: John and Marilyn Hansen of Omaha, Merle and Jeanette Hansen of Fremont and Loren and Martha Hansen of Lincoln; two brothers Lawrence and George of Omaha; one sister, Lena Hoberg of Omaha; also his grandchildren, John Mark Hansen and his wife Cheryl of Arlington, Texas; Jean Hansen of Omaha; Ronald Hansen and his wife Shamra of Fremont; Susan Hansen of Fremont; Angie Jill, Michael and Scott Hansen of Lincoln; and his dear friend Helen Appel of Omaha; other relatives and a host of friends.
