Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 4 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington for Vera Hansen, 82, who died July 29, 1993 at Valentine, Nebraska. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery at Kennard.

Vera Evelyn Petersen Hansen, daughter of Henry James and Clara Schaeffer Petersen, was born February 10, 1911 on the family farm near Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. She was baptized April 4, 1915 in the First English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Benson, Nebraska.

She attended school in Douglas County until moving to Sarpy County at the age of nine. There she attended the Sandborn Rural Grade School which was located on her parent’s farm. Following graduation from Technical High school in Omaha she was employed as assistant time keeper for the J. L. Brandeis store.

On April 4, 1934, at Gretna, Nebraska, she married Lawrence Hansen of Kennard. Their first ten years of marriage were spent on a farm near Arlington.

In 1944 the Hansen family moved to the Hansen home place south of Kennard. Lawrence and Vera retired from farming in 1972; however they remained on the family farm until 1982 when they moved to a condominium in Blair.

She was preceded in death by her husband March 15, 1987, and she continued to live in Blair until June 1991 when she sold her home and spent six months of the year with each of her daughters.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Bennington and served on the stewardship and social ministry committees. She was president of the First Washington Extension Club and served the “Prairie View Perpetual Care” as president and secretary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara and Henry Petersen; a brother, Harvey Petersen, and her husband, Lawrence Hansen.

She is survived by three children, Joan and her husband, Fred Splittgerber and their children, Susan, David, and Albert of Columbia, South Carolina; Virginia (Ginny) and her husband, Jim Lee and their children, Ronald, James Robert and Michael of Valentine, Nebraska and Loren and his wife, Monica and their children, Kelly and Elizabeth of Chicago, Illinois. Her surviving sister is Grace McGeorge of Omaha.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge.
