Merlin H. Recker, 81

Merlin H. Recker, 81, of Fremont, NE, died Sunday, April 10, 2016, in Fremont. Merlin was born July 13, 1934 in West Point, NE, to Frank and Antonette (Wolken) Recker.

He graduated from West Point Guardian Angels High School in 1952. Merlin enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1954 until 1956. After returning home, he married Wilma Wuestewald on January 9, 1957, in West Point. Merlin worked at the Fremont Post Office, as a window clerk for most of his 35-year career, retiring in 1995. During retirement, he worked part time for Moostash Joe Tours and also did driving for Napa Auto Parts in Fremont. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with Wilma.

Merlin was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont, very active member of Knights of Columbus Council 1497 and member of Fr. Leo Raus Assembly 4th Degree. He was a member of the American Legion Post 20 of Fremont. His passions in life were playing cards with his friends, playing golf whenever he could, and spending time with his family.

Merlin is survived by his loving wife, Wilma; children: Judy (Kirk) Brooks of Fremont, Jane (Tom) Steinbach of Lincoln, Joe (Sherri) Recker of Lincoln, Joan (Bryan) Clark of Papillion and Jenifer (Ron) Sorensen of Blair; 14 grandchildren: Amanda (Jake) Hansen, Mikala (Wally) Thompson, Kelvin (Alex) Brooks, John and Bill Steinbach, Zach and Luke Recker, Michelle, Aaron and Juliet Clark, Kaylee, Jacob, Megan, and Hans Sorensen; 6 great-grandchildren: Lily and Emma Hansen, Beckett and Mareck Thompson, and Elise and Scarlett Brooks; brother, Dale (Charlene) Recker of Glenwood, Iowa; sisters: Mary Ann Wuestewald, Yvonne (Jerry) Peatrowsky, and Sharon Buck, all of West Point; sisters-in-law: Merna Recker of West Point, Cel Franzluebbers of Beemer, Theresa (Vincent) Spenner of Dodge and Gwen Wuestewald of Fremont.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Leonard, Clarence, and Larry; sister, Catherine Wehenkel; 3 sisters-in-law; and 6 brothers-in-law.

Funeral Mass is at 10:30 AM, Thursday, April 14, 2016, at St Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont. The Rev. Father David Belt will officiate. Visitation is Wednesday from 4 -8 PM with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation Thursday is at the church 1 hour prior to service. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont, with military honors conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post 854 and American Legion Post 20.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Fremont Area Alzheimer's Fund.
